Week 6: I’m Focused – How To Decline Your Invitation to The Comparison Game!

AFFIRM THIS,

I am Focused.
My attention is one of my most valuable assets.
This week, I will invest my attention exclusively in good things!
I will not waste my focus comparing myself to others.
I will not waste my focus worrying about things I cannot change.
I will focus on being present and open to the possibilities that my daily deposits will open up for me.
In doing so, I will gain the courage to move forward in my goals while blessing others around me.

Every day there is a war waged for your attention. This war aims to get you to care about things that don’t sow goodness into your proverbial garden.

Chief among those distractions is COMPARISON! Especially this time of year, your mind will entice you to devote your attention to the neverending, would of, should of mental thread. In doing so, suddenly, you will believe that others are better than you. You will be drawn to look at other creatives or folks on your similar career path and conclude that you were not good enough this year.

The problem with the comparison game is it is relentless, and you will not win. It will force you to say “Uncle” while robbing you of every drop of joy you once believed this year held. It will not stop whispering to you about your lows while bringing to your remembrance all of the fantastic things you witnessed others achieve this year!

I probably don’t need to tell you this, but I am going to say it anyway –

You cannot afford its shenanigans!

So at all cost, refuse to engage. Instead, you can choose to own your focus and allow yourself to think only about the positives.

One way to do this is by asking yourself the following questions:

  1. What five things am I grateful for right now?
  2. What thing did I do this year that reminded me of my strengths?
  3. Who showed grace to me this year?
  4. What thing did I do for someone else that showed me the power of kindness?
  5. What are 1–3 specific things that I can start these last two weeks of 2021 that will ensure my new year begins with good seeds sown into my goals/aspirations?

While this is not an exhaustive list of questions, and you may choose not to answer them all, answering these or similar questions will give your hope a boost as you close this year. Answering them will also give you the courage to press forward, knowing that it only gets better from here!

Until the next time,
Sending you love, courage, and MORE Courage
Sincerely,
D

“No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. — Philippians 3:13–14,” NIV
